Antonio and Javier Abreu, brothers from San Juan de la Rambla, a small town in northern Tenerife with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, grew up deeply connected to their surroundings and to the identity of their homeland. From that connection was born Oceánico Ocean Coffee, a project that emerged from the need to unite the pieces of their lives into a shared purpose: to revive and reinterpret the rural and agricultural culture of their village —a culture now fading and without generational renewal— and to combine it with their entrepreneurial spirit and background in personal development.
Their goal was to bring to life a product that embodied all of this: authentic, innovative, and soulful, capable of connecting tradition, territory, and a new vision of the future through coffee. After several feasibility studies analyzing the climate and the key factors for successful cultivation, they began the first phase of the project at La Hacienda, an estate abandoned for more than 40 years, located 250 meters above sea level on Tenerife’s northern coast. The 1.5-hectare plot was carefully restored and adapted to host the first 2,000 coffee plants across 4,000 square meters.
They chose the Starmaya variety, an F1 hybrid developed by CIRAD (the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development, in Nicaragua). The institute itself showed interest in the initiative and decided to provide the plant material to study its adaptation and evolution under the unique conditions of the Canary Islands. However, they understood that the true value of the project should not be limited to the rarity of its origin or the uniqueness of the variety.
For this reason, they invested in advanced training in post-harvest processes, developing a unique sensory proposal with five coffee profiles: Natural, Gold Honey, Red Honey, and two anaerobic fermentations with seawater from their native Canary shores —a nod to the oceanic environment that surrounds them and gives the project its name.
They are currently approaching the 2025 harvest, during which they will incorporate cutting-edge methods that promise to take the expression of Canarian coffee to a level never seen before.
Oceánico Ocean Coffee represents the balance between roots and future, between respect for the land and a relentless pursuit of innovation. It stands as proof that even on an island bathed by the ocean—where coffee once seemed impossible—passion, patience, and vision can turn a dream into a reality, cultivated bean by bean.
